French Connection #CleverTryNew

Thank you to P&G’s Have You Tried This Yet? program and Kroger for sponsoring my writing about trying new things and breaking out of my everyday routine. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

I’ve been dreaming of Paris for over half my life. I took French all four years of high school. Did you know that I was the French Club President? Seriously. I went on to take two more years in college before finally giving it up.

My first apartment was decorated with Eiffel Towers and fleur de lis and I currently have an absolutely fabulous Parisian bedroom. One of the first dates my husband planned for me when we were dating was a trip to Paris, Texas. We visited and took photos of the Eiffel Tower topped with a cowboy hat.

I’ve been to Vegas more times than you can count on both hands, and Paris is still my favorite hotel. I adore everything about it. We’ve even paid the ridiculous price to go to the top of the tower and have our photo taken. Yes, I realize that’s for suckers.

Oh. And you may have noticed my blog header too. I’m slightly obsessed.

You’d probably assume I would have made it to actual Paris by now. While I have always really wanted to go, I have also been pretty terrified. I don’t know a single person in France. I have completely lost any ability to use all of those years I spent studying the French language. I doubt I’d be able to have a conversation with anyone beyond asking where the bathroom is and ordering a croissant. I am much better at reading and writing it, but speaking it? Non! The cost has always been something that has deterred me too.

This is the year. We are going to do it. We’re going to get past the monetary concerns. I’m going to get beyond the fear of being (relatively) alone in a strange country. I am going to study so that I can carry on a decent conversation in French. What am I doing? I am sitting in my car at lunch everyday and listening to CDs to refresh my memory. I am spending my free time reading about things to do, places to see and stuff to buy. I am shopping for outfits to wear and studying French fashion. Am I still terrified? Yes. Will I move past all the fears and have an absolutely amazing time? Oui!

It might be no big deal for a lot of people to just hop on a plane and go to a strange new place, but this is really outside of my comfort zone and I cannot wait. I want to do it right. I want to enjoy every single moment. That is a really big deal for me. At the end of this I think I am going to be able to say that everything I’m doing now to prepare for this experience was just as fun and rewarding as the actual trip. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. I might even eat escargot. Look out, France!

What new things are you trying?

P.S. Here is one of my first outfits for Paris.
