Your Songs by Harry Connick Jr. Review and Giveaway

There are some songs that are so recognizable and timeless that you know every single word and can sing along. Elvis Presley’s “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” and Frank Sinatra’s “All The Way,” are among the beautifully redone covers sung by Harry Connick Jr. on his new ablum, Your Songs.

I have always been a fan of Harry Connick Jr.’s voice, and have to admit I really enjoyed hearing his version of these classics accompanied by a full jazz band and string orchestra. In some cases I think his renditions were just as good as or better than the originals such as “The Way You Look Tonight,” but then there were others like “Your Song” where I much prefer Elton John’s version. That is simply because it is one of my all-time favorite songs (also covered by Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge) and he strays a bit from the flow of original. To his credit, he does try to make each song his own and I can appreciate that. Cover albums often turn into bad karaoke versions of the originals, and that is one reason I am not a big fan of them. This album is actually a rare exception, and it definitely stands on it’s own two feet.

I also couldn’t help but think of Michael Jackson when I heard Harry Connick Jr.’s version of “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin. If you watched the memorial service, you will remember Brooke Shields mentioned that this was his favorite song, and his brother performed it. It is a really beautiful song, and I enjoyed Harry’s version too.

I am in the process of planning a bridal shower for one of my best friends, and I immediately recognized that this was a perfect album to provide music for our event as guests mingle, eat, and when the bride-to-be is opening her gifts. It would also be fantastic pre-wedding ceremony music too. With so many beautiful and romantic songs, there is something for everyone. Here is the track list:

  2. The guy just keeps turning hits out did you know he has seven top 20 U.S. albums, and ten No. 1 U.S. jazz albums, earning more number one albums than any other artist in the US jazz chart history. He also give backs as we have seen how he has help his home town New Orleans after Katrina.

  6. I love Henry Connick Jr.’s version of “Younger Than Springtime” from the tv version of “South Pacific” with Glenn Close and HCJr. as Cable. In that vein, “Some Enchanted Evening,” I am sure, will be a favorite off this CD.
