2009 PETCO Chihuahua Races

I am getting excited about the 2009 PETCO Chihuahua Races that are taking place in August. This year the Dallas race is on August 8 (oh, the heat!), but Daniel assured me on the PETCO blog that they are taking extra persuasions to make it a more enjoyable experience for both the humans and our four-legged friends. |
Laurie,
I’ve been in Dallas in August and I know what you mean about the heat. We are aware of this and are making a few changes to the races to accomodate for the hot weather.
Here are some specifics:
- Earlier start time – first heat 9 a.m.
- More shaded areas around tracks
- Misters/coolers in shaded areas
- Additional turf runways to protect little paws/pads
- Tables with umbrellas for added comfort
- Kiddie pools for dogs to cool off
- Fold-a-bowls provided to all participants
I think it is outstanding that they are taking extra measures, and we are very excited for Brownie to race in his fourth consecutive year. If you’ve been following me for a few years, he has had quite a few adventures. The most memorable was when he sniffed the winner’s butt to the finish line a few years back, pretty closely followed by last year when he stopped and pooped on the track before walking back over to Dave. His brother Ty, owned by my friend LeAnn, is definitely the fastest of the family (a fact we knew immediately when they were puppies). Luckily we still have almost two months to train before the big day, and I have high hopes that Brownie is going to make a big showing (whether he places or not) this year!
If you are local, they have a Dallas Chihuahua Races Facebook event set up where you can declare your attendance, meet other racers, and post pictures of your pets. I thought that was another great idea to get people in the spirit prior to race day! Register your chihuahua (coming soon) and find out what other cities the 5th Annual PETCO Chihuahua Races will take place in on their site!
