Be kind to your pet

By Laurie | May 7, 2009

Did you know that May 3-9 is the American Humane Association’s Be Kind to Animals Week®? I am an animal lover, so I wanted to take a moment to spread the word even though there are only a few days left. I made a donation to the PetSmart charity earlier this week when I stopped in for treats for Brownie.

-1 The Home Again Web Site is also doing a good thing this week. For every pet that is registered into their program, they will donate $1 to Bring Pets Home, a fundraising Web site specifically created to help shelter animals.

One of the kindest things you can do for your pet and yourself is to make sure that they have the proper tags and identification. Did you know that 90% of all animals who are lost and do not have tags are never recovered? I could not imagine all of the grief families go through just because they do not take the time to make sure their pets can be identified in case they get out by accident.

HomeAgain is a national pet-recovery service that goes beyond microchipping. They have helped recover more than 500,000 lost animals. For an annual subscription fee, HomeAgain members have telephone access to pet-recovery specialists and 24/7 emergency medical assistance at 1-888-HomeAgain. The program also includes up to $3,000 (less a $50 deductible) in medical pet insurance for lost pets and up to $500 in reimbursable travel expenses for pets found more than 500 miles from home.

Simply amazing! I cannot imagine ever losing Brownie, and if something did happen where he got out, I want to make sure that he is able to be identified so that he could be found. Please make sure that you have tags or chips for your animals.

  1. I always make donations at Pets Mart and Petco when they are trying to raise money. This past weekend I was at Pets Mart and they had some dogs out (which I thought was an adopt me thing). It was a help pay for our medical bills/adopt me day. It was so heart breaking to see these dogs who had been abused and neglected. I couldn’t adopt but I did donate.
