Are You Responsible?
By Laurie | March 27, 2009
As you all know, breast cancer awareness and the charities that conduct research to help find a cure are very important to me. I participated in several big events last year, and I am participating in the 2009 Race for the Cure that benefits Susan G. Komen this June.
![]() |
When I was offered the opportunity to work with IZEA and Liberty Mutual’s Responsibility Project, I jumped at the chance. You may remember their 2006 commercial that portrayed everyday people selflessly helping others. I believe that being socially responsible is very important. |
| In the spirit of that premise, I recently began organizing a community event in my area to raise funds for a local cause. I knew immediately that I wanted my event to benefit Susan G. Komen due to my past and current involvement with the organization. | ![]() |
Komen has been the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since its inception in 1982. They work to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all, and energize science to find the cures.
![]() |
On April 16, I will be hosting a dinner and raffle at On the Border in McKinney to benefit Susan G. Komen and my participation in the Race for the Cure. On the Border has generously offered to donate a percentage of the night’s restaurant profits (from 5PM to close) to my North Texas Race for the Cure team and are going above and beyond to help promote the event. |
The raffle prizes will be donations from local and online businesses to be announced soon. I will also have swag bags filled with breast cancer awareness items for the first 25 diners who attend and have my flyer. Please e-mail me if you are interested in receiving one. Also if you know anyone in the DFW area, please direct them to my Facebook Group promoting the event. Tell as many of your friends as you can, so that we have a great showing and can earn a big donation on behalf of Susan G. Komen!
| If you are not local and would still like to help, you can also earn a chance to win my online raffle prize, an 8GB iPod Nano, by making a $5 (or more) donation and letting me know you did so in the comments. That will earn you twenty-five entries. | ![]() |
Here are three more ways to earn an entry:
1) Leave a comment telling me what you are doing or plan on doing in your community to be more “responsible” for one entry. For ideas, check out Liberty Mutual’s Responsibility Project.
2) Write your own blog post about my giveaway and link to this post for one entry.
3) Follow me on Twitter and send the following message for one entry:
RT @laurie_pooh is raffling an iPod Nano to benefit Susan G. Komen. Support her here: http://tinyurl.com/raceforethecure #icause
The idea is to gain buzz and excitement about my event, create a dialogue about responsibility, and raise as much funds for breast cancer as possible. You have until April 17 at noon to make donations before the raffle takes place. A winner for the iPod will be selected randomly, and will be announced in a post later that same day recapping the event. Liberty Mutual is proud to sponsor the discussion around responsibility as it relates to this blog post, however, they do not endorse the topic/cause referenced in this blog post. Good luck and thank you for your continued support!
Edit: Special thanks to Karen, Pelf, Amanda, Carolyn, Jill, Connie , and Stacey, Nellie, Lynne, Julie, and Corrin who made donations to my Race for the Cure. They each have 25+ entries toward the iPod.

I donate through a couple of people I know who do the race for the cure. I tend not to take a particularly active role.

Posted by: KarenMy husband and I along with our friends try to clean up the bike path that goes through our town. Many other people do it to when they pass through there but some people just dump their trash (I mean litterly trash bag and all) down along the path. We live in a small town and you would think that where we don’t have many people here that they wouldn’t do it. The path is for families to walk to town so they can spend time together while the little ones ride their bikes. Thanks for the chance.

Posted by: joe gerschI try and help out individuals in our community who are elderly and are alone. There are two neighbors right in our lakefront community that I look in on every day. I help them with their groceries, emptying the trash and shoveling in the winter and light yardwork in the summer. Many times people forget the elderly and to me there is such a need to see that they are safe too! I also play a role in organizing clean up along the shores of our lake. It is amazing in a negative sense how people out on the lake disrespect the water and the land around it and just randomly throw all kinds of garbage off their boats and personal water crafts and it all gets washed up to the shorelines. We organize a weekly group that does weekly clean ups to keep our shores clean or hazardous and unhealthy garbage and we try to do this year round as weather permits, in the winter not so much so.
