Greg Behrendt Thinks I Rock!

By Laurie | March 20, 2009

The truth is, Greg Behrendt probably signs all of this #1 New York Times Bestselling books the same way. But still, I get the feeling that the He’s Just Not That Into You author truly believes that all women rock. He thinks that just because one guy isn’t calling you doesn’t mean another won’t acknowledge your complete foxiness and total fabulocity. So why even waste your time on the first? Or something like that.

I won’t pretend to know a whole lot about his philosophy. I have actually never read the book, and haven’t had the chance to see the movie either. I wanted to, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet. (edit: I have since both read the book and seen the move. I enjoyed and recommend both). That doesn’t mean that I live under a rock. I saw Greg on Oprah back in the day, and I watched Sex in the City. I’ve even seen his special on Comedy Central. I’ve also been exposed to enough spoilers on both the book and movie to get the gist. At least I think so. You all will correct me if I’m wrong, I’m sure.

I did read the first couple of chapters of the book tonight, after Dave and I got home from seeing his show at the Improv in Addison. We had front row seats against the stage. I have to give the Improv props for doing way a way cool Twitter promotion. I not only got two complementary tickets, but also a copy of the book that I was able to have him sign after the show. Greg was super entertaining, and gets really animated in his “storytelling.” We both really enjoyed the performance. He doesn’t just give advice to the the women in the audience either. I think there is something that everyone can relate to in his routine. And no, he doesn’t just talk about the book. He also did extra material and had a Question and Answer session after the show. How many comics actually go the extra mile? Not only that, but he gives part of the proceeds to The National Domestic Violence Hotline. See? He’s a good guy. He even let me banter with him about his feelings about the movie while he signed my book. He rocks.

Even if I had read the book during my single/dating years, I doubt I would have taken his advice anyway. I think I obsessed about my relationships far more than Greg would approve of. I sat by the phone and waited for guys to call. I even initiated a few phone calls myself. Believe it or not, I cried over men who did me terribly wrong. Why? Probably naïvité and immaturity.

Perhaps I am not giving myself enough credit though. There was one guy that I was dating casually who was also dating another girl at the same time. He came over to my dorm room to hang out one day and told me that he wasn’t sure which of us (me or the other girl) he liked better. I basically told him to choose the other girl. I suppose if he was really into me, we never would have been having that conversation to begin with. Am I right? I wanted someone who thought I was awesome and didn’t want to hang out with anyone else. The good news is I think I got that in the very next relationship I was in anyway, even if it didn’t last either.

So there you go, semi proof that the He’s Just Not That Into You method does work. At least until the next guy decides down the road that you’re not the one after all and breaks your heart.

If you are local and want to see Greg Behrendt, he’ll be at the Addison Improv Friday and Saturday, with two shows each evening. For tickets, call the Improv Box Office at (972) 404-8501. He also will be in Raleigh, North Carolina, Irvine, California, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before his tour ends. Check him out!

  1. I own a first-edition of He’s Just Not That Into You, have read the book twice and seen the movie once and I STILL have tendencies that are like the women he talks about.

It’s a hard habit to break!
