81st Annual Academy Awards

By Laurie | February 22, 2009

I love the Oscars. Sadly I didn’t get out and see very many of the nominated films this year, so it’s hard for me to get into it as much as I normally would.

Random observations: LOVE LOVE LOVE Marisa Tomei’s Versace gown! Not feeling Tim Gunn’s red carpet interviewing skills. I wasn’t a fan of Heath Ledger’s Joker (highly overrated), though I have always *hearted* him and think he deserved recognition for his overall work. The Seth Rogen and James Franco bit was really funny even though Pineapple Express was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I really need to get out and see Slumdog Millionaire. I’d really like a string of those Swarovski crystals from the curtain! This show needs more Hugh Jackman. Wow: There were a lot of JCPenney ads. Nicole Kidman is so beyond gorgeous and classy.

Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson are getting a lot of coverage. I forgot Ron Howard directed a movie this year. I like that they brought out five previous winners for the major categories. How much do I love Anne Hathaway? Yay for Kate! My Anthony Hopkins is so skinny, and they forgot his Sir! I totally called the Sean Penn win. I wanted Benjamin Button to win Best Picture.

What were some of your favorite moments? Outfits? Upsets?

  1. This was the first time I actually watched the Academy Awards from beginning to end. My mom had a little “party” at her house. I enjoyed the show! Hugh Jackman is gorgeous and was a wonderful host! I too loved how they had previous winners come out and talk about each of the nominees for Supporting and Lead actor and actress. I was really happy to see Kate Winslet win finally and I was thrilled about Slumdog -mostly because it was the only movie I saw that was nominated but I did love it! I can’t agree with you on Marisa Tomei’s dress. It was compared to dinner napkins and I have to agree. But what the hell do I know – the majority of my wardrobe is from Wal-Mart! :) Oh and I was disappointed about Heath Ledger winning. I saw The Dark Knight and I don’t think his performance was Oscar worthy – I thought there were others that were more deserving. But I do agree with you that some of his previous work did deserve recognition. All in all it was an enjoyable evening – good food, good company and a really good show! :) I think for next years awards I’m going to make an effort to see more of the nominated films – It definately makes the show much more interesting!!

  2. Oh and I forgot to add to my thoughts – Ben Stiller making fun of Joaquin Phoenix was HILARIOUS!!

  3. I agree with almost all of your observations except I am happy that Slumdog Millionaire won. You really should see it. It’s a great movie.
