State Fair of Texas recap

By Laurie | October 12, 2008

It’s been a busy weekend for me. Yesterday was the big garage sale and today I went to Nikki’s bridal dress fitting with her mother and our other friend. Friday I spent all day at the fair with my co-workers. When I say all day, I mean ALL DAY. We left on the 9:05 AM DART train to Dallas and hopped on a bus at Cityplace the rest of the way.

We enjoyed margaritas and beer for breakfast at a Mexican joint inside the car show.

We walked around for a bit before stopping for corn dogs. The State Fair isn’t the State Fair without having a Fletcher’s Famous Corny dog. I tried the new spicy version. It was yummy.

I also “won” a 2-night stay in Las Vegas by spinning a wheel and landing on WIN. I then received a time share sales pitch that I quickly ended when they asked for my credit card to charge $20. They would have included airfare had I followed through with that. I plan on calling the toll free number to see if the hotel stay is even legit. D and I have been talking about going for our anniversary next year, and I think there is talk of taking Nik there for a bachelorette weekend.

Next, my co-workers indulged in Chicken Fried Bacon, this year’s big new item. I tried a little piece, but it didn’t taste all that great to me. We did a little more walking around and headed to the Midway where I won D a stuffed killer whale. Mo and I also rode the ride below. I felt like I was going to fall out and my head was hitting the top of the cage. It was fun though.

After the ride we decided it was time for desert. We split a funnel cake, and it was soooo good, (and worth 8 WW points too)!

After playing a few more games and walking around some more, we took the sky tram across the park in order to make it to the Lottery Show. That is my favorite part of the fair. I was called up on stage to play the YES/NO game, but didn’t win. I still love Paul Adams.

We also stopped to say “Howdy” to Big Tex who was looking spiffy in his new Dickies duds. The boys enjoyed a few more beers, and Mo and I sipped Pina Coladas and Mojitos.

It was a beautiful (and long) day. We didn’t leave until after 7:00 PM. We shared one last snack on the way out: Fried Grill Cheese. That just might be my new favorite fair food. It’s a good thing I only had a little piece. I can’t imagine it was too good for us (or our diets).

That’s about it for our 2008 State Fair trip. It ends next weekend when Nikki and I will be walking in the Dallas Race for the Cure, so I guess D and I won’t be taking a trip together this year. He also went with his co-workers earlier in the week. I guess there is always the 2009 fair!

  1. My sis is a huge fan of the State Fair – hasn’t missed one in years. She actually works there now – her part time job is in the children’s museum and they do special stuff during the fair. Maybe next year I’ll see you there!

  7. Skeet, Does your sis blog? Someone recently left me a comment saying that they work at one of the museums and that I should stop by. I would have loved to, but that wasn’t really in the cards for the trip this year. Usually I hit all the “learning” buildings. It would be awesome to see you there next year. It is truly one of my favorite events of the year!

  8. Georgie, we really did have margaritas for breakfast! They were $5 a pop, but really tasty. Can’t wait for the SSS! I’ve been looking around for ideas even though I don’t know who my partner is yet!

  11. Jeannie, the fair is usually about a month long. It starts at the end of September and runs through the third week of October. You should totally come next year and we can meet you up there!

No, they’re not $8 and $12. That would be CRAZY! It’s actually 8 and 12 coupons. Each coupon is 50 cents, so corn dogs were $4 and beer was $6. Still a little rich for my blood, but it is only once a year!

  12. Laurie, Sis doesn’t blog. The poor dear thinks her computer is a classroom tool and rarely even goes online. Next time you go to the museum there at the fairgrounds, go into the kids area. I think she works there fulltime during the summer and weekends during the school year. Her name is Elaine – ask for her!

  13. Uh oh, Skeet! Sounds like my mom! She doesn’t know all the fun she’s missing on the computer/internet, huh?! Next time I’m in the area I will definitely drop by to say hello. There’s a cool King Tut exhibit somewhere in the area that I want to check out!

  15. Ooh, deep-fried fair food. I’ve heard so much about it but never have been in the vicinity of such delicacies like chicken fried bacon and deep fried oreos. I must say, I am intrigued by the thought. I was thinking the same thing about Jeannie about the prices! I’m glad those were coupons.

  16. OOH! I love fairs. El Hub and I missed the big county fair this past July. We usually go every year, but now I’m going through my funnel cake and corn dog withdrawals. I don’t know if I can make it until next year.

  18. Chicken fried ribs were a hot topic at work today. I’m not sure I could eat anything chicken fried. I’m not entirely sure what that even means. Haha.
