2008 State Fair of Texas

By Laurie | October 6, 2008

If you know me, you know that the State Fair of Texas is one of my most favorite times of the entire year. I get a little chill everytime I hear Big Tex shout, “Howdy Folks!”

I love it so much that I actually sometimes go more than one time per year. I was really disappointed to miss it last year (one of the few times I haven’t gone since I’ve lived in Texas).

Our weekends have been booked this year all the way up until the end of the fair (due to preparation for the 3-Day and other activities), so I was afraid I’d have to miss it again this year. Then my boss announced last week that she was going to grant me and my three co-workers a Fair Day! Woot!

This Friday we are all hopping on a DART train and riding down to the fair grounds to enjoy the sites, sounds and smells. Hopefully we’ll even get to taste a few things. Eating right at the State Fair of Texas is hard though, especially if you are on Weight Watchers… or really any other diet. That applies to three of us (myself included).

We have all been attending WW meetings, and have been discussing what our plan of action is going to be for this day. It’s easy to blow your diet with all of the high fat/carb foods we’ll be exposed to. This year’s big “treat” is chicken fried bacon. I prefer to call that chicken-fried-heart-attack-waiting-to-happen. I also heard something about bacon icecream (bleh). Don’t even ask how many POINTS are in them. For the first we were told 28, but that could be a low estimate.

I don’t necessarily have a favorite food at the fair. I usually have a hard time making up my mind actually. Last time I was on a diet at the fair, I had a turkey leg. I just heard that might not be as good for you as you might think. During the WW meeting my co-workers attended last week, they were told that a Candied Apple has 8 POINTS, as does a Fletchers Famous corndog. If you’re jonesing for something loaded with sugar, a funnel cake will cost you 16 POINTS. You better save your flex points!

I plan on eating before I leave the house that morning, hitting up Starbucks on the way to the train station, and indulging in a single corny dog. There will be enough else to do to keep ourselves occupied and out of the food stations.

I’ll report back this weekend!

  3. Hey Laurie! You can get some exercise during the State Fair and come visit us at The Women’s Museum just north of the Esplanade! We’ve got 3 floors of exhibits (and lots of stairs) as well as the Girls That Rock! Music Festival on the weekends.

Have fun at the State Fair!

  4. I loved the State Fair when I lived in Texas!! When Brendan and I started dating I was still living there and when he came to see me I took him to the fair. Needless to say - I have very fond memories of that fair. :) Have a great time!

Fair food is certainly not WW friendly is it? When we went to the fair to see Danielle perform this year, I would have eaten my way through that place had everything not been so damn expensive! We ended up leaving and having a nice lunch at a brew pup instead - but I sure missed my corn dog and funnel cake!

  6. Doris, I made a new post about what we did at the fair if it’s not too late for you guys. I know it ends this weekend. We just walked around and ate and tried some of the new fried foods. I really love the lottery game, so we watched it twice. There were not really too many free things this year. If you test drove a car you’d get a backpack, and you could sign up for a free hat. Other than that, we paid for everything and each spent around $50 to $100!

  7. Jill, it does cost a fortune and I am convinced there isn’t anything that is good for you! Since it’s only once a year I don’t feel too bad about spending the money. It was pay day too, and that helped. I’m glad you have fond memories of the fair. If you guys ever come for a visit during the fair, we will have to go together!

  9. Well us old gals are going today anyway, but she’s really cheap…We are so used to tons of free stuff…The Womens building was never a charge to get in…When I was 5, some guy had a car that ran on water…GM or someone paid him off….There was also visa phone with a monitor about 8 inches …also disappeared, since it was too expensive for most folks???There used to be great fun games with neat free prizes, I wish I had collected some…I still have a couple of old Princess telephone key chains…There was a lady on the news at one of the chuck wagons thats sup to help plan your day…shes oldern us…So we’ll try to find her…..ALSO I HEARD NOT TO MISS THE FRIED NUTTER BUTTERS…will report to you guys tomorrow..
Oh I always bought a live chameleon lizard which was pinned to my shirt …Some years they got loose in the house! My mother couldn’t sleep at night…Good old days! They had fireworks every night that you could see from all over Dallas…The cowboys were so handsome back then, and the sound of spurs everywhere…It was so exiting then…
