Thyroid Update

By Laurie | July 29, 2008

I usually write a post following any doctor’s visits that I make regarding my thyroid so that I have documentation to look back on. My last visit was in April where my bloodwork showed my levels were off and I was given a higher dosage of Armour Thyroid. I had been taking a lower dose for about 30 days prior to this visit. Before that I had been taking Synthroid.

The reason for my visit today is that I have been falling asleep at work and in the car again. That is never fun, and as a matter of fact I cannot stand it. I’m also gaining weight, despite eating much better and working out (not to mention all the walking) several times a week. I am getting plenty of sleep, yet I am too tired to function during the day. He had suggested a sleep study in the past, and I kind of blew him off. I am open to it now. I just want to find out what is wrong and get on with treatment, even if that means I have to been hooked up to a machine while I sleep.

He said that he would consider raising my dosage of Armour even if the test results don’t show a need for it. He’ll also have someone call me about the sleep study. I am retaining a lot of water (it’s visible), so he wrote a perscription for a water pill to help me get rid of that 10 pounds. It’s a start.

I am fighting to stay awake right now to make sure that I sleep through the night. Only a few more hours to go.

*EDIT* Today (7/31) the doctor called back and set up my sleep study. I was also informed that my blood work came back abnormal when it comes to my liver (huh?) I will have to follow up with that again. They want to see me next month for more blood work. In the meantime, I am also going to make it a priority to get hooked up with a good PCOS specialist. I may be focusing on the wrong issue.

  1. Hmmm… are your thyroid levels normal with this new medicine? I’ve been on synthroid for… nearly 9 years now only, I’ve never actually been told of another option.

I hope that things work out for you though. I know the struggle with getting levels right is ridiculously difficult. Hope you start feeling better soon!

  2. I signed up for your giveaway earlier, and then your “thyroid” post just caught my eye. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and hypothyroidism 6 years ago after my second son was born. Then this past fall I had elevated thyroid levels and was finally diagnosed with Graves Disease. Right before Thanksgiving I had an ablation to destroy my thyroid and am now back on Synthroid. What a road it has been! I never realized just how much your thyroid controls EVERY part of your life! Anyway, I always feel a sisterhood with anyone else who’s going through thyroid issues. I sooo hope you can get it all straightened out and start feeling “normal” again. Remind me again what that feels like? :)

  5. Thanks for the links, J! That shirt is super cute. I wish I could find a doctor that could figure out what is wrong. They seem quick to medicate without really finding out what is wrong.

  6. Thanks for the comment, Paula. It’s nice to meet you. I’m sorry you’ve had a much harder road with your thyroid. I agree– will we ever feel normal again?!

  7. Jen, I didn’t know about Armour at first either. I found out about it from a fellow thyroid patient that had a lot of success with it. Really for me, it’s about the same as synthroid. I was hoping it would be an improvement. Everyone is different though. I just wish I could find the right combo/dosage for me.

  8. Oh the wonders of the thyroid. I am taking synthroid… I went to the Dr on Monday to have all of my levels checked. I have also been gaining weight and falling asleep. My husbands favorite question, why do you go to be at 6 when you have not ate dinner yet?

I hope that they figure out whats wrong. I can’t wait to get my blood levels back.

  9. Hi,

I had come to your blog a few days ago for the giveaway and came back today to say Hi. I had bookmarked your blog. I love your cute blog design.

My good friend had a sleep study and they put her on some meds for ADHD. THey seemed to help with her being so tired and falling asleep.

    Good Luck.

I will check back to see how you are doing.

  12. Wow, thats scary you fall asleep in the car…i dont have that problem, but i have chronic eye dryness and it causes my eyes to involuntarily close, so if i feel it really coming on, i stay out of the car.

  13. Oh my stars…we are medical sisters. I have PCOS and thyroid issues.

If you don’t mind my two cents….also have a hormone screen done to see where your levels are. I have to get my hormones AND my thyroid balanced to feel right. My medical regime is synthroid (which I’m not good about taking), alactone, glucophage (as a preventive against diabetes due to the PCOS). It works for me. I take a good vitamin high in B’s which helps naturally regulate the thyroid. The vitamin I take is called Vitalert and I get it at Rite-Aid.
