Ever had Nail Withdrawl?

By Laurie | June 22, 2008

Dave and I haven’t done a while lot this weekend. I have been sick since last weekend, and was out from work since Tuesday. Would it be crazy for me to admit that I am so ready to go back? Sleeping until 10:00 or 11:00 AM is great, but it’s not fun having to lay around on the couch and watch lame TV all day knowing your co-workers are having to pick up your slack. I was well enough to go back on Friday, but it was nice to have the extra day for myself. Thanks, Angela!

After checking in on work stuff on the laptop, I went out for a bit and had my first manicure in seven years. I can’t believe I’ve had Solar Nails for that many years. I had them taken off (well, I grew/buffed them off) starting in December. For a very brief time five years ago I had them soaked/pulled off. That ruined me for life. It was very painful. I still remember. I had them put back on again when Dave and I were engaged shortly after and they’ve been on since. It’s been over six months now and honestly, they are still pretty weak. I wonder if they will ever be strong again. Part of the reason I wanted to get rid of them is the time spent at the salon getting them filled. I would seriously dread having to make the appointment to sit there for over an hour. By the time I would actually do it, they’d look horrible too. Sometimes they wouldn’t do a very good job on them either, and I’d be mad at myself for spending $50 (or more after I got a pedicure too). Money was the other positive reason to leave them off.

I’ve hated having them off too. If I have to spend the time painting them myself at home (which I am also pretty good at), I get angry when they chip a day or two after. That’s the great thing about solars. They would hardly ever break, never turn yellow, and I could go almost a month (3 weeks) without doing anything. I’m pretty much selling myself on them, huh? It’s been two days since my manicure, and sadly there are already a few chips in my once perfect nails. You just can’t win.

I can’t say when I’m going to go back to getting them done solar-style, but I have the feeling I’m not going to be able to take it like this much longer. At least I tried. Does anyone else have any advice for kicking the habit for good?

  1. I had acrylic nails off and on (more on than off) for three years and then I discovered Bliss Spa and have had solar nails for the last year and a half. After Jackson arrived, I found that they simply weren’t practical and I had them removed. I thought I’d miss them but I’m fine without them. It’s nice to have that time and money (I was budgeting $60 per month) back. I also have to admit that they only looked great for the first week and after that they would just look trashier (word?) and trashier (you know what I mean) until I got them filled.
Anyway (10 minutes later)…prenatal vitamins have helped my nails a lot. Due to breastfeeding, I’ll be taking these vitamins for a while so I hope my nails and hair continue to benefit. Prenatals aren’t just for expectant moms, ya know? You can give them a try (if you aren’t already).
    Ok, shutting up now :)

  2. LOL– so Tiffany, are you suggesting I just have a baby and the urge to have them will disappear? *s* If you ever want to go back to them, California Nails in Vista Ridge does an awesome job. They definitely still looked good several weeks later. When we moved I tried to keep going, but it was really too far to drive for my nails. Yet another reason I let them go.

Do they sell prenatals over-the-counter? That’s definitely something I should look into. My thyroid issues have left me with thinning hair too. My nails were probably impacted too, but I didn’t notice since they’ve been covered all these years.

  3. I had my nail for more years than I can remember. When I got accepted to nursing school I knew they had to go. I made my appointment in January of 2007 and had them removed - and then I went in to mourning. It took a long time for them to get strong again but now they are strong and grow like crazy. Unfortunately as long as I’m a nurse I can’t have fake nails and manicures are great but they chip too quickly - so I just go natural. I hate that I have to keep them short because I have short fingers to begin with - but I’m learning to live with them. They will never look as nice as they did when I was getting them “done” every two weeks - But it was worth it I suppose. I’ll let you know for sure when and if I graduate from the program and then start working! Ok, I know that didn’t answer your question but I just felt the need to tell you my tale of woe. :P

  4. I wore acrylics for five years, and after I graduated college I couldn’t stand spending $100 a month getting my nails done. It’s just not as fun when it’s your money and not Sallie Mae’s.

Anyway, it took almost a year for my nails to grow out and become strong again, and another 3 years for me to stop biting my nails! That’s with a lot of Sally Hanson strengthening polishes.

Now that my nails are somewhat presentable, I go once a month for a $12 manicure to keep them in shape.
