Tackle It Tuesday
By Laurie | April 1, 2008

Over the weekend I tackled a HUGE project– our lawn. Granted we have a teeny, tiny lawn. None-the-less, it had gotten out of control. Most of you know that we just built our first home and moved in late October of last year. I’ve never had to deal with yard work before, and David really hasn’t either (nor do either of us want to). That’s why we were happy to have a petite yard just big enough for Brownie to take care of the 3 P’s (Playing, Peeing and Pooping).
I’ve been wanting to do something with our landscaping since we moved in, but haven’t really been motivated. That was part of the appeal of having everything brand new in the first place. Unfortunately I wasn’t happy with some of the bushes they selected, and ideally I’d like to remove them someday. I’m also not a fan of the wood chips. We can’t really afford to start all over, so for now I’ve got to work with it.
I kid you not, we had some of the HUGEST weeds I have ever seen in my life growing in our front yard. I was truly embarrassed. I don’t want to be “those” people. You know the ones– Christmas lights still up in March, pink flamingo proudly displayed, and unkempt lawn with weeds growing out of control. The latter would have been us. On Saturday, I spent the afternoon pulling them all out by hand. I had a giant trash bag full of them when I was done, and boy did I feel accomplished. Those suckers had really killed the grass under them too. I also immediately called the Chem Lawn folks, so hopefully they will come out next week and kill them for good. I’m not interested in being out there this summer pulling weeds.
I’m also hoping they will green up our lawn. It still looks dead which I’m bummed about. C’est la vie. Oh, and I also ran out to the local nursery and bought some gerbera daisies and planted them in our flowerless flowerbed. I think they look pretty cute. I might even go back for some more this coming weekend. I wasn’t sure how many flowers I’d need, and I think it might look a little nicer and more filled in if I buy another set. It wasn’t very expensive either. For under $50 I got six plants, one bag of miracle grow potting soil, a little shovel set, and pink breast cancer gloves.
Here are the results:
BEFORE:

I promise that this weed was much larger in person than it appears here.

They might look like cute little flowers, but they are definitely weeds!
AFTER

No more weeds, and some cute little daisies.

Posted by: corrin on April 1st, 2008 at 2:05 pmI for one just embrace the flowery “weeds” and call it lawn flair.
Posted by: Jason on April 1st, 2008 at 11:42 pmLisa– Thanks! Your enchanted sunflower forest sounds fabulous. I’ll be by to visit!
PitterPatter– I didn’t even want to mess with MY OWN lawn. I think it would have been easier with some help though, and probably a lot more fun.
Kelly– Weeds are definitely not fun or pretty. I got stuck by several of them too!
Karen– Thanks! It could be better, but I am definitely NOT an outdoor or gardener. I hope to get better though. I have even considered buying some books on the topic.
thebullbuster– Thank You! I’ll be by to check yours out too.
Colleen– Thanks! It was kind of a big tackle considering how LITTLE our yard is!
Corrin– Thanks! I actually think I need to call some professionals. After the “tornado scare,” several of them are looking kind of sad. I think I’m going to need to go out and buy more and work on it again this weekend.
Jason– LOL That sounds JUST like you… seeing the beauty in everything. That, or you are just lazy.

Posted by: Jeannie on April 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 amJeannie– thanks! I think I will give it another shot this weekend if the weather is good. I’d like to add a few more.
