The beginning of my 3-Day Experience

Last summer I used my blog to help raise money for The Global Fund, a charity created to help fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria worldwide. I blogged for 24 hours straight for the cause as part of a program called Blogathon. At the end of 24-hours (Yup–I didn’t sleep!), I had raised $110. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but it calculated into 916 single-dose treatments that will prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child. I also purchased t-shirts and pins from the GAP (50% of the proceeds of those are donated by (RED) to The Global Fund). I held drawings and contests, posted videos, and blogged my heart out in the hopes of raising money and spreading awareness. I had a great time doing it. You can still read all my 2007 Blogathon posts. |
| This year I am taking on a cause that is closer to my heart and the hearts of my husband’s family. I signed up to participate in The Dallas/Ft. Worth Breast Cancer 3-Day to honor his mother, Arveta. She died from the disease in 1996 at a very young age. As a result of posting about this on my blog last week, the word has spread and I have aleady raised $705 in my first seven days. That doesn’t even include all of the cash I have earned from selling breast cancer bracelets and stickers at work. I am amazed by the kindness and support that I have received. I still have a long way to go in my fundraising efforts, but I have so many ideas and plans for the upcoming year. | ![]() |
I have formed a team with my friend Nikki, and we plan on raising far more than the minimum that it takes to participate in the event because of our personal connection with the cause. We have tons of party ideas too. Shooters for Hooters, anyone? I am also baking cupcakes this weekend to sell at work with the help of my friend LeAnn. I am calling that program “Cupcakes for the Cure,” and I have an awesome idea for t-shirts that I will share with everyone next week. I have also volunteered to host training walks in my area and am very excited about that since Frisco has some awesome walking trails.
Everything is coming together beautifully. Nik and I attended our “Get Started” meeting on Saturday, which was an amazing event. A woman named Robin got up and spoke about dealing with the disease while pregnant. She ended up losing both of her breasts, but she continues to fight for her life. This especially touched me because of the very young ages of her children. David and his brother were in their 20s, and his sister was 16 when their mother died. That is horrible enough, but can you imagine growing up without your mother when you are a toddler? It absolutely broke my heart, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. We MUST find a cure to this disease. That is why I am walking, and that is why I am so committed to raising as much money as I can. There is no reason that anyone should have to lose their mother, daughter, sister or friend to this.
We got a lot of great fundraising ideas at the meeting, including asking companies to sponsor us. I plan on contacting New Balance, Sprinkles, Starbucks, Luke’s Locker and Hallmark to name a few. Their suggestion was to ask for $500 in exchange for a spot on a t-shirt that we will wear during the walk. I will also be asking my company and American Express (David’s company) to help us too.
In addition, I will be participating in Blogathon 2008 this summer to raise more money for breast cancer. And of course I will keep everyone updated on our efforts every single step of the way through this blog and our team blog. It is going to be an amazing journey, and I hope that you will consider sponsoring me, spreading the word, and participating in all of the fun things that I have planned leading up to the actual walk in November.
Love,
Laurie
