Trash Cans and Garden Gnomes

By Laurie | October 2, 2007

I am starting to get the feeling this whole moving thing is never going end. We brought car loads of stuff over already and yet we don’t really seem to be making a dent in all the stuff we have here at the apartment. I’m sure once we call the moving truck to take the big items it will seem more real.

Meanwhile, our giant trash can and recycle bin were delivered at the house. It’s exciting that we don’t have to go out and buy them ourselves, but it’s not so fun that if someone steals them we have to pay $65. It’s also not exciting that they only offer trash pickup on Friday. We are spoiled with the whole 7-day a week, 365 days a year pickup here. And no, I’m not kidding.

Our grass also seems to be dying in several spots, so I hand watered those while we were over unpacking tonight. I’m not looking forward to yard work, but I have found myself out picking weeks and watering nearly every visit. We don’t have an area for lawn tool storage except for the garage, but Dave really wants to hire a lawn service anyway. Our yard is pretty small, so I am thinking I can get out there and do it myself to save some cash. I want to at least give it a try. I also want to plant some flowers, but I’ve never been a gardener before. I’m not so sure how that’s going to work out. I also desperately want a gnome. Is that tacky? I just have to find the perfect one.

As my boss Angela would say, all these complaints and woes are just some of the many “joys of owning a home.”

  1. I remember when we moved in to our first house 10 years ago. Gosh, it was so exciting and so scary all at the same time!! I’m so happy for you guys! I love the garden gnome idea and I think Dave is right on target with the lawn service. :) If Brendan didn’t enjoy working in the yards so much, we would have to hire one here because I hate yard work! I would rather clean bathrooms! :) But you might find that you love it. It’s therapeutic for Brendan. For the life of me, I’ll never understand that but more power to him I say!

  2. I’ve been looking for a gnome too! Let me know if you find a decent one (that’s not too pricey). Personally, I would rather mow the yard than clean a bathroom!
